The newly formed state of Telangana has a rich history of education courtesy, the princely city of Hyderabad. As per 2011 census, Telangana State has a Literacy rate of 66.54, as against All India literacy rate of 74.2 percent. Rural Telangana literacy rate was 57.3 percent and urban literacy rate was 81.1 percent of literacy rate. Telangana government has taken up the process of overhauling and strengthening the public education system from the kindergarten level to degree education at college levels in a phased and systematic manner.
School Education in Telangana
To make effective and meaningful implementation of the fundamental right to education, elementary education was brought under “Sarva Siksha Abhiyaan” (SSA) to universalize elementary education. Similarly, secondary education has been brought under the flagship “Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyaan” Programme (RMSA). These two schemes are also being implemented by Telangana to strengthen school education in terms of access, enrolment, retention and quality. Telangana state has achieved 99% access at an elementary level and 91.5% at a secondary level. Primary schools and Secondary schools have started in areas which were not served earlier. The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) promotes the vision of world-class education in Telangana State through quality leadership, support, and services. It aims at continuous improvement of education in the State.
Higher Education in Telangana
Telangana attracts several students from all over India as it has number a higher education opportunities especially engineering colleges. Some of the major institutions offering high quality technical education include NIT Warangal, Central University of Hyderabad, and SPA Vijayawada. These institutions are also known to conduct research work in various fields. Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University(s) (JNTU), Indian School of Business (ISB) and International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) are some institutions that have gained a lot of acclaim globally for imparting high standard education to students. Telangana is home to some of the country’s most important universities of India which include Osmania University, Kakatiya University and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University. University of Hyderabad, The English and Foreign Language University Hyderabad and Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad Urdu University are some of the popular central universities of Telangana.
